11 weeks.

maya @ 11 weeks :: january 20, 2006

  • grabs on to things -- our shirt, her blanket, her toys.
  • puts stuff in her mouth.
  • makes very loud suck-y noises with just her lips. it's so cute to watch her lip go in and out of her mouth.
  • she's trying to have "conversations" with us by making more sounds than last week.
  • is sleeping on her stomach, even at night. [please, don't judge me! i know it's not recommended to do this, but at this point we're just doing whatever it takes to get her to sleep.] it helped her sleep for 5 hours on saturday night.
  • it appears she likes to listen to music, especially when she goes to sleep. JR made her a great mix cd that i turn on whenever she goes in her crib.
  • got her first batch of immunizations -- she slept for six hours that night. JR thinks we should give her shots everyday to make her sleep. he's joking of course ... at least, i think he is!
  • she fusses and cries when i carry her near the laptop. the girl knows, i tell ya! she knows that her mama is obsessed with reading blogs.
  • she was really fussy on monday night so JR decided to take her for a drive. he didn't come back for two hours! he drove somewhere between 130 and 150 miles to get her to sleep. all she would do was doze off long enough to store up energy to scream some more and drive her father crazy.
  • she has gotten into the bad habit of biting me when she eats.
  • it appears maya's "witching hour" starts around 6:30pm and lasts two to four hours, until i knock her out with some breastmilk.

Don't worry about *me* judging you about your daughter's stomach sleeping. It's so easy for people who don't have infants to tell you what you should be doing - until you have one and you'd do anything in the world to get them to stop crying and go to sleep, it's impossible to understand what it feels like!

I can't believe how advanced maya is even though she's only 3 weeks ahead of JSC. JSC is no where close to finding her hands, grabbing for things, much less putting them in her mouth! Nor have we got a smile yet that's worth a photo. oh well. good luck with the sleep!

thanks northern_girl! she has been smiling and laughing a lot lately (when she's in a good mood, obviously).

hobokener, i totally agree about what you said. but ironically, and unfortunately, as a parent sometimes you start judging other parents. especially when you have a "good" kid you start tsk-tsking parents whose children act up in public. "we never had that problem," "if that was my kid ...," "why don't they just ..." etc. for some reason parents totally forget that each child is different, each family is different, and there are so many different ways to accomplish parenting.

i've totally gotten over judging other parents (i must admit, i did it for awhile when ian was little). i don't have the time or energy to worry about other people. the only time i worry is if what the parent is doing is endangering the child.

of course, when i put it that way, i guess putting maya down to sleep on her stomach endangers her ...

another important point is to not compare your child to other children. most children will get around to doing everything when they're ready or when they feel like it. of course, it's important to know the milestones just in case something is wrong. ian did everything late but i didn't worry about it. that's just part of his personality; to this day he's slow learning physical activities.

i think maya grabs things and puts them in her mouth because she's always hungry! no really, i think she's just an oral baby. ian never put anything in his mouth (except the boob!) so he was never interested in aiming items into his mouth. it could be that JSC doesn't care to put things in her mouth either. besides, a lot can change in 3 weeks.

the smile will come, and when it does, it'll be all that much sweeter!

That smile is too wonderful for words. I love the doll, too. Ethan had one like that.

And you know, it wasn't so long ago that babies on stomachs was perfectly fine. So, listen to your instincts.

I judge you. I judge that you are a great mom, who knows what she's doing. So there!

Biting? She's biting already?! She IS oral. Man. Charlotte bit me once, with teeth, at nine months, and HELLO WEANING! OWCHIE!!! I hope it's only a phase.

What kind of music does she like? Ethan was fanatical about falling asleep to music, but not Simon or Charlotte. They have to have total silence, or whirring, like from a fan or womething. Ethan preferred Enya, or Star Trek soundtracks, even as a toddler.

    GG,

yes, ouchie! i can't wait for teeth to grow in -- ha! i told JR that if she bites me even once with teeth, she loses her booby privileges FOREVER!

the cd that JR made for maya is instrumental soothing stuff, mostly from indie rock bands. but there are also tracks by yo-yo ma, ryuichi sakamoto, and mark mothersbaugh. i like the mix too, so we listen to it a lot. hopefully JR will compile another cd in the near future.

we have noticed that she tolerates more noise than ian ever did, and tends to sleep better when there's some background noise rather than silence.

and thank you for the compliment on my parenting. :) it makes me feel much better when i know people have confidence in me.

Since hobokener posted we finally got a photo-worthy smile, which you saw. Smiles are so great.
Can't wait to meet her in person soon!
